ABOUT US

Four Decades of Mountain State Expertise Behind Every Trip We Guide

There are outfitters who know Montana fishing and there are outfitters who have spent their entire professional lives learning it from the inside out across multiple states, multiple seasons, and more river miles than most anglers will ever see in a lifetime. Anderson Outfitters falls firmly into the second category. What Bruce Anderson has built in Bozeman is not simply a guide service. It is the product of over forty years of hands-on experience guiding hunters and anglers across the Mountain West, distilled into a year-round fishing operation that brings genuine expertise to every single trip we put on the water. When you book with Anderson Outfitters you are not getting a seasonal guide who picked up a drift boat a few years ago. You are getting decades of hard-earned knowledge working in your favor from the moment you step into the boat.

Anderson Outfitters

OUR STORY

Anderson Outfitters did not happen overnight and it did not happen in Montana. The foundation of this business was laid across four decades of guiding hunting and fishing trips throughout the Mountain West, in the high desert rivers of New Mexico and Arizona, the storied trout streams of Idaho and Colorado, and eventually the legendary waters of Montana that drew Bruce Anderson back to his native state and kept him there.

Bruce spent those years the way the best guides spend them, on the water, in the field, learning the rhythms of different fisheries across different seasons and developing the kind of instinctive knowledge that only comes from genuine time spent in pursuit of fish in wild places. He guided hunters through the backcountry and anglers through some of the finest river systems in the American West, building a reputation along the way as someone who knew where the fish were, when they were moving, and how to put clients in position to catch them.

After four decades of working for others and learning everything the Mountain West had to teach him, Bruce made the decision to take the next step. Anderson Outfitters was established in Bozeman, Montana, with a clear vision: to bring together a team of experienced guides who shared the same depth of commitment to the craft and to build a year-round operation that served anglers in every season rather than simply chasing the most convenient window of the calendar. The result is the outfitter you see today, fully licensed, professionally operated, and built on a foundation of experience that very few guide services anywhere in the country can genuinely claim.

Meet Bruce Anderson

Founder, Licensed Outfitter, and the Driving Force Behind Everything Anderson Outfitters Does

Bruce Anderson is the kind of person who has spent his life doing what he loves and getting better at it every single year. Growing up with a deep connection to the outdoors and the fishing and hunting traditions of the Mountain West, he built a career that most anglers only dream about, decades in the field guiding across some of the finest wild country in North America.

His experience spans a remarkable range of fishing environments. The technical tailwaters and freestone streams of the Mountain West. The big river systems of Montana where the Yellowstone, Missouri, Madison, Gallatin, and Big Horn demand a different approach and a deeper knowledge base than most fisheries require. And the frozen lakes and reservoirs of Montana’s winter season where Bruce and his team pursue walleye, northern pike, yellow perch, and trout through the ice while most of the fishing world assumes there is nothing to be caught.

That last point is worth dwelling on. Bruce’s commitment to ice fishing as a legitimate and deeply rewarding fishing experience sets Anderson Outfitters apart from virtually every other outfitter operating in Montana. While other guides take the winter off or head south to warmer water, Bruce is on the ice, drilling holes, reading the sonar, and putting clients on fish that most people did not know existed in Montana’s frozen lakes. That willingness to fish twelve months a year and to find fish in conditions that other guides consider off-season is a direct reflection of who Bruce Anderson is as a guide and as an outdoorsman.

When he established Anderson Outfitters he brought that same energy and commitment to building a team that reflected his own standards. Every guide who works with Anderson Outfitters has been selected for their knowledge of Montana’s rivers and lakes, their ability to read water and find fish, and their genuine investment in the experience of every client who steps into their boat or onto their ice.

The Waters We Know

Five of Montana's Greatest Rivers and the Finest Ice Fishing Lakes in the Northern Rockies

Anderson Outfitters operates on a range of Montana’s most productive and most beautiful fishing waters, and knowing these fisheries well is one of the most important things we bring to every trip we guide.

YELLOW STONE RIVER

The Yellowstone River is the longest undammed river in the contiguous United States and one of the most storied wild trout fisheries in the country. It holds exceptional populations of brown, cutthroat, and rainbow trout across a variety of habitat types from broad valley stretches to technical canyon sections, and our guides know it across the full range of conditions that Montana's seasons produce.

MISSOURI RIVER

The Missouri River below Holter Dam is one of the finest tailwater trout fisheries in the American West, with dense populations of large rainbow and brown trout that require precise presentations and a thorough understanding of the river's complex currents and feeding lanes. Our guides have spent extensive time on the Missouri and know how to put clients in position on water that can be genuinely technical.

MADISON RIVER

The Madison River has a legendary reputation among fly fishers worldwide for good reason. The riffle-heavy character of the upper Madison, the broad pools of the lower river, and the exceptional hopper activity that the system supports across the season make it one of the most rewarding rivers in Montana to fish with a knowledgeable guide.

GALLATIN RIVER

The Gallatin River runs directly through the Bozeman area and is one of the most accessible and productive trout streams in the state. Our guides fish it through multiple seasons and know its character in every condition from spring runoff through the technical low-water fishing of late summer.

BIG HORN RIVER

The Big Horn River in southeastern Montana is one of the premier tailwater fisheries in the Rocky Mountain West, with brown and rainbow trout populations that rival anything in the country. The float fishing on the Big Horn is exceptional and our guides bring the knowledge of its hatches, flows, and fish behavior that makes the difference between a good day and an outstanding one.

Each of these fisheries has its own distinct character and its own particular rewards and our guides know all of them from the inside.

Anderson Outfitters

Our Guide Team

Experienced, Licensed, and as Passionate About Montana Fishing as Anyone on the Water

The guides at Anderson Outfitters are not seasonal employees filling a summer schedule. They are experienced fishing professionals who have spent years developing an intimate knowledge of the rivers and lakes we fish and who bring that knowledge to work on every single trip. Our guides have fished the Yellowstone, Missouri, Madison, Gallatin, and Big Horn Rivers extensively across multiple seasons and multiple conditions, which means they understand how these fisheries behave in high water and low water, during the early season hatches and the late fall streamer bite, on blue-sky days and overcast days when the fish respond completely differently.

The ice fishing program at Anderson Outfitters is guided by team members who have invested real time learning the unique demands of hardwater fishing in Montana. Reading ice conditions, understanding how different species relate to structure and depth in winter, operating sonar equipment effectively, and keeping clients comfortable and productive through a full day on the ice in Montana temperatures are all skills that take years to develop properly.

Our Commitment to Our Clients

Tailored Instruction, Top Tier Equipment, and a Genuine Investment in Your Day on the Water

Anderson Outfitters was built on the belief that a great guided fishing trip is about more than putting fish in the net. It is about the quality of the experience from the first conversation to the last cast of the day. We tailor every trip to the goals, the experience level, and the preferences of the specific anglers we are guiding because a first-time fly fisher and a veteran angler who has been fishing Montana for twenty years deserve fundamentally different trips and both of them deserve an exceptional one.

We provide top quality equipment across both our fly fishing and ice fishing programs so that clients arrive ready to fish regardless of what gear they have at home. Our guides are experienced instructors who communicate clearly, coach effectively, and create an environment on the water where anglers of any level feel comfortable asking questions and working on their skills. Full day trips include lunch, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages so that the only thing our clients need to think about is the fishing.

Anderson Outfitters

ALL Year Round. Every Season. No Excuses.

Montana Fishing Does Not Stop in Winter and Neither Do We

One of the things that genuinely distinguishes Anderson Outfitters from most outfitters in Montana is our commitment to fishing twelve months of the year. The conventional wisdom in the outfitting business is that Montana is a summer and fall destination and that winter means the end of the season. Bruce Anderson has never subscribed to that view and Anderson Outfitters reflects that philosophy in everything we do.

When the last fall floats are done and the rivers begin to lock up, we shift to the ice fishing program that Bruce and our guides love as much as any summer day on the Yellowstone. Ice fishing in Montana is not a consolation prize for anglers who cannot visit in the warmer months. It is a genuinely distinct and deeply rewarding experience that produces species you cannot target effectively any other way and puts you on the frozen lakes of one of the most spectacular landscapes in North America with a guide team that knows exactly where the fish are and how to catch them.

Anderson Outfitters holds Montana Outfitter License number 68559.
